Course Offerings

  • Anatomy and Physiology

    You will be instructed on the structure and function of the human body. Cells, tissues, organs and organ systems are discussed in health and disease. Each organ system is discussed in depth focusing on the practice of medical assisting. Health and medical problems common to each organ or system which may be encountered in the medical setting are introduced. 

  • Treatment Room Procedures

    As a student you will be exposed to both lecture and hands-on clinical exercises to gain expertise in clinical medical assisting skills such as vital signs, emergency procedures, sterilization techniques, drug an immunization administration, basic x-ray techniques, first aid, CPR and specialized office procedures. Common medical instruments and equipment are introduced. Use and care of these items are practiced. 

  • Pharmacology

    You will learn the most commonly used medicines in the modern healthcare world. The science of the most common drug’s actions will be reviewed including the indications, contraindications, half-life, administration and dosages. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of the medical assistant in safely administering medications within a legal/ethical framework.

  • Electrocardiography (EKG)

    You will learn how to care for both manual and computerized EKG machines and will receive hands-on training on how to perform an EKG, mount EKG strips and determine whether and EKG is accurate. During this course you will be instructed as to when to inform the physician of a medical emergency such as a ventricular tachycardia.

  • Laboratory Techniques

    In this course you will learn how to collect samples from patients to perform needed tests. You will also learn how to draw blood (phlebotomy) intravenously and to process the blood sample to perform different tests. You will also receive training to perform point of care testing which includes blood sugar, hemoglobin, hematocrit and urinalysis. 

  • Computer Applications

    In this course you will receive a basic overview of computer concepts, including hardware and software. You will be instructed on Microsoft Office and its components: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook. In addition, you will learn how to effectively navigate the internet to construct complex searches to find specific information. 

  • Health Insurance and Electronic Health Records

    You will be introduced to electronic health records, medical coding and health insurance billing and reimbursement. Common medical coding (ICD-10, CPT-4) and billing practices, the health insurance industry, legal and regulatory issues and differences in reimbursement methodologies will be reviewed. Principles of medical coding and billing related to proper claim form preparation, submission and payment processing and the use of electronic health records. 

  • Medical Office Management

    This course will instruct you on the many laws, statutes, and normal business practices which apply to the medical office setting. This includes medical law and ethics, medical records laws, effective communication skills, appointment scheduling, financial and supplies management and organizing the office.
